Welcome back to GWCheck Talk. Interviews with GroupWise partners and professionals.
This time it’s all about Greg Arnette and Sonian.
Greg has a history with (GroupWise) administrator tools and is now reaching for new development.
Gert: What is Sonian?
Greg: Sonian is a technology platform and hosted services company on a mission to help millions of organizations world-wide manage their critical IT functions such as archiving, search, compliance, e-discovery and storage management. The Sonian platform is easy to use, cost effective, scalable and secure.
The Company leverages a mixture of Web 2.0 frame works, open source components, proprietary intellectual property, and grid computing utility infrastructure to deliver competitive hosted services at a fraction of the cost of other current vendors.
Gert: Who is Greg Arnette, founder and CTO?
Greg: I am responsible for product vision, technical innovation, and engineering leadership. Over the past 15 years, I have consulted major corporations and technology companies in messaging, collaboration, Internet, and networking, this includes the administration of email systems. During that time I have created messaging products and services, starting with AlertWare which was acquired by Netpro, and most recently IntelliReach, which was acquired by Infocrossing in May 2006. The messaging system solutions I have designed have been for GroupWise and all other communication platforms.
I founded the IntelliReach Corporation (that some may remember in the early days as EmailXtras) and served as the CTO from 1998 to 2006. IntelliReach Corporation was a pioneer in integrated messaging management products and services. Since the acquisition of IntelliReach by Infocrossing, I have been developing web-based information management solutions leveraging open source technology with virtualization infrastructures.
Gert: Welcome Greg, great to have this opportunity.
Your background with GroupWise goes long way back to EmailXtras and Intellireach. How did that evolve to Sonian ?
Greg: Even back in the early days of EmailXtras and IntelliReach, I was always trying to make life easier for GroupWise administrators. As the requirements for email archiving have stretched to include every organization whether public or private, I saw that administrators jobs were getting more difficult. Over the past few years I have been closely monitoring the emergence of cloud computing and especially at what Amazon Web Services was doing with S3 and EC2. It soon made perfect sense to combine the compelling elements of cloud compute (scale, reliability, performance, low cost) to solve the archiving pain point in a way that is more secure, reliable and affordable them many companies can achieve in their own data center. Cloud-compute hosted services are an ideal platform for an ever-growing archive. No SQL database hassles, no additional SAN purchases, no backup worries.
Gert: What does Sonian do for or with GroupWise ?
Greg: Sonian offers a hosted archiving service for the GroupWise community that allows organizations to be archiving all or some of their mailboxes in a matter of minutes or hours, as opposed to weeks or months (for deploying a software or appliance solution.) The service is extremely secure and scalable making it a great compliment to the superior security and scalability that GroupWise shops get from their own infrastructure.
Gert: How does Sonian position itself into the GroupWise community and market and what is the challenge ?
Greg: Sonian provides a great alternative for email archiving for the GroupWise community. While organizations running other mail platforms like Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes have had access to hosted SaaS email archiving solutions for many years, GroupWise shops have had limited choices to date for email archiving. The GroupWise ISV’s have only provided installed solutions that simply add additional hardware, software and storage to manage. Organizations running GroupWise are under a lot of preasure from management to look at migrating to alternative collaboration platforms. We believe one of their best arguments is the low administration costs associated with running GroupWise. If you are forced to manage an entire inhouse archiving infrastructure, you maybe losing some of footing in your arguments.
Gert: Does Sonian have special features with GroupWise Bonsai ?
Greg: We plan on using the SOAP API’s in GroupWise Bonsai extensively. This will allow us to capture more details about messages that are archived along with additional metadata. We expect the user experience to be enhanced a great deal with Bonsai and Sonian.
